Death Toll in Attack at Russian Concert Hall Tops 110 as Suspects Detained

Russian authorities said they had detained 11 people in connection with a terrorist attack on a concert hall in a Moscow suburb, as the death toll from the Friday night assault rose to 115, investigators said.

Among those taken into custody were four people who prosecutors said played a direct role in the violence, in which gunmen shot audience members at close range and set off smoke bombs.

Islamic State, the Islamist militant group, claimed responsibility in a statement on Telegram. Officials from the U.S., which warned Russia of intelligence indicating an impending terrorist threat, said they believe a branch of Islamic State based in Afghanistan was behind the attack.

The assault—the largest terrorist attack in Russia in years—adds to the security challenges facing Moscow as its troops fight a bloody war of attrition with neighboring Ukraine, which Russia invaded on a large scale in February 2022.
