Zelensky Presses Congress for More Aid for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pressed U.S. lawmakers for further military assistance and new sanctions in a speech Wednesday beamed from Kyiv, making a personal plea to President Biden as his administration prepared to announce another round of aid.

Mr. Zelensky, whose country was invaded by Russia about three weeks ago, delivered a virtual speech Wednesday morning to both chambers of Congress. Ahead of the speech, Ukraine said it launched a counteroffensive against Russian forces encroaching on its capital and other key cities.

Lawmakers gathered in an auditorium in the Capitol complex to watch the address, and rose to their feet for a standing ovation as soon as Mr. Zelensky appeared on the screen, his hand pressed to his heart.

President Biden was planning to watch the speech if his schedule allowed, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Tuesday.

Mr. Zelensky said Ukrainians would not give up Kyiv, even under daily bombardment. “We have not even thought about it for a second.”
