• Each year, on March 8th, much of the world celebrates "International Women's Day." It is an official holiday in some countries including Russia, Vietnam, and Cuba, but is not an official holiday in the United States.
• The day has its origins in the socialist movement. In 1909, the Socialist Party of America organized a "Women's Day" in New York City. The day became a national holiday in Soviet Union in 1917 after women gained suffrage.
