Noem Defends ICE in Minnesota Shooting, MN Officials Call It 'Concerning'

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minnesota woman, was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis on Wednesday.

The Details: According to video footage that surfaced online, Good was blocking traffic with her vehicle when ICE agents got out of theirs and confronted her, trying to open the door to her car. Good then tried to drive away, and the agent on the front side of her vehicle drew his weapon and shot her. Two separate videos show different angles of the incident.

For Context: MS NOW (Left bias) interviewed an eyewitness, Emily Heller, who claimed Good was a "protestor" who was "blocking traffic with her car." In the wake of alleged widespread fraud in Minnesota's Somali community, the Trump administration has deployed extra ICE agents to the state.

DHS Comment: Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said law enforcement were "attempting to push out" a vehicle that had become "ensnared in snow" when "a mob of agitators" that was "harassing them all day began blocking them in, shouting at them, and impeding law enforcement operations." Noem said agents "approached the vehicle of the individual in question, who was blocking [them]," and that "she had been stalking and impeding their work all throughout the day." Noem said Good committed "an act of domestic terrorism" by proceeding to "weaponize her vehicle, and attempted to run a law enforcement officer over."

Local Police Comment: Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said, "I do not know the exact circumstances of the shooting, but… it's obviously very concerning whenever there's a shooting into a vehicle of someone who's not armed." He added that sometimes it could be justified, but "most law enforcement agencies in the country have trained very intensely to try and minimize the risk" of using deadly force.

How The Media Covered It: Outlets from the right often prominently included Noem's assessment of the incident as "domestic terrorism," sometimes in headlines. Outlets from the left and center often noted it further down in coverage. Several outlets from the left, like Associated Press (Left), NBC News (Lean Left), and the Minnesota Star Tribune (Lean Left), humanized Good in headlines, describing her as a mother, poet, and someone who was "caring" toward her neighbors. Newsbusters (Right) praised NBC News' TV broadcast for its analysis of the videos as "a dose of context and nuance that [viewers] do not normally get."
