DHS Warns Violent Threats From 'Both Sides' Will Increase After Roe v Wade Decision

Summary from the AllSides News Team

A leaked memo from the Department of Homeland Security has warned that an increase in abortion-related threats of violence could occur if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v Wade.

The offenders who are encouraging violence notably identify with "a broad range of ideologies," according to the authors of the memo. Some of the alleged threats include "burning down" the Supreme Court, abortion clinics and places of worship. The memo also addresses online death threats targeted at "justices and their clerks, members of Congress, and lawful demonstrators." In response to the report, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Wednesday that both sides of the political spectrum should be called out when it comes to violence. She also added that President Joe Biden wants Congress to fund increased security for Supreme Court judges "as soon as possible."

Left-rated outlets were more likely to highlight how dozens of online threats that encouraged violence at abortion rights rallies have been reported to authorities. NBC News (Lean Left bias) emphasized how some extremists shared "images and comments of vehicles ramming into lawful protesters." Conversely, some right-rated outlets paired statements from pro-choice groups with warnings of extremist violence. For instance, IJR (Lean Right bias) accentuated how the Women’s March Movement tweeted that "this will be a Summer of Rage across America."
