Russia Strikes Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure in Nationwide Aerial Attack

Russia launched a massive attack across Ukraine overnight into Monday, striking critical infrastructure and killing at least six.

The Details: The attack used “more than 100 missiles of various types and around 100 Shahed drones,” according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who called it “one of the largest attacks” of the war so far. Areas hit included eastern regions like Kharkiv, as well as the Black Sea port city Odesa and the capital Kyiv. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed it was targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and said all targets were hit.

For Context: Saturday was Ukraine’s Independence Day, and ahead of it, the US Embassy in Kyiv warned of an increased risk of Russian strikes. On Saturday, a former British soldier and safety advisor for Reuters (Center bias) and two journalists were killed in a Russian attack on a hotel in Kramatorsk. The strike also comes as Ukraine’s military occupies a large swath of land in Russia’s Kursk region; voices across the spectrum have debated how the assault could affect the war going forward.
