New ChatGPT Health Allows Users to Connect Medical Records

Summary from the AllSides News Team

OpenAI announced ChatGPT Health on Wednesday, a new feature that allows users to connect their health records for more tailored health information.

The Details: In a press release, OpenAI said the goal was to help users feel "more informed, prepared and confident" navigating their health. ChatGPT Health allows users to connect medical records and wellness apps, including Apple Health, Function, WeightWatchers and MyFitnessPal for "more personalized, grounded responses", however the company reiterated it was "not intended for diagnosis or treatment." OpenAI also says it will keep the new health information separate from other types of chats and not train its models on this data.ย Interested users can join a waitlist to be part of a small group testing out the new feature.

For Context: According to an OpenAI report, more than 40 million people use ChatGPT daily for health care questions, including about insurance and personal health. It also said two in three US doctors have used ChatGPT in at least one case, while nearly half of nurses use AI weekly. Axios (Lean Left bias) reported seven in 10 health care conversations in ChatGPT outside of normal clinic hours. A 2025 survey also found roughly 49% of large language-model (LLM) users employ LLMs for mental health support. ChatGPT has faced previous criticism over providing false information and coaching young users in suicidal ideation.ย

How the Media Covered It: Several outlets noted privacy concerns and misinformation from ChatGPT. The Verge (Lean Left) noted OpenAI left out mental health in its announcement, and said it's possible ChatGPT Health "could worsen health anxiety". Axios wrote more people could turn to AI for health care guidance as Affordable Care Act subsidies end. Right-rated outlets covered the number of people using AI for health care. A Fox Business (Lean Right) panel said that while the information can be helpful, ChatGPT is not a substitute for real medical professionals. However, it and Axios both noted ChatGPT can help inform patient questions to ask doctors that otherwise might be overlooked. Breitbart (Right) reported on uncertainty and wariness of developing AI health gadgets, saying while they "make a lot of promises," tech and health experts warn of product accuracy and data privacy issues. BBC (Center) quoted AI leaders who described the feature as a "watershed moment" that could be a "game-changer" for OpenAI.
