Rescuers Find 'Debris Field' in Search for Missing Titanic Sub

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Rescue teams searching for the missing Titanic touring submarine reportedly discovered a "debris field" on the ocean floor Thursday.

The Details: The Coast Guard will hold a press conference to discuss the findings at 3 p.m. ET Thursday. If still intact, the submarine is thought to be running low on oxygen for its five passengers. The OceanGate sub, Titan, was reportedly equipped with roughly 96 hours worth of oxygen. The sub launched Sunday morning, meaning the 96-hour period has expired. OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush is one of the five passengers, along with a French explorer and a British businessman, as well as a Pakistani businessman and his 19-year-old son. Remote-operated vehicles (ROVs) have reached the sea floor and are looking for the sub, while a ship with over three miles of cable and a wench waits to possibly haul Titan up from the depths.

For Context: Rescuers reportedly detected underwater banging at 30-minute intervals near the sub's last known position over the past few days, but haven't confirmed what they are.

How the Media Covered It: The missing sub continues to be a top story across the spectrum. Updated 6/22/23 at 1:06 p.m. ET
