Recapping 2022 Primary Tuesday in Massachusetts

Summary from the AllSides News Team

On Tuesday in Massachusetts' 2022 gubernatorial race, state Attorney General Maura Healey won the Democratic primary and Geoff Diehl, who was backed by former President Donald Trump, won the Republican primary.

Healey essentially ran unopposed, while Diehl beat out moderate Chris Doughty. The battle is to replace Republican Gov. Charlie Baker, who is not seeking reelection for a third term. Massachusetts will observe two weeks of early voting in late October and early November, with no excuses needed for mail-in voting. Healey is favored to win the November match up, in a state with many more adults who identify as Democrats than Republicans. Though traditionally known as a blue state, Massachusetts has elected only one Democratic governor since 1991. If victorious, Healey would become one of the first openly lesbian governors in the U.S.

Sources across the political spectrum covered the Massachusetts governor's primary race, and unsurprisingly, it was covered more prominently on the local level.
