Trump and MD Gov. Moore Trade Remarks on Addressing Baltimore Crime

Maryland Governor Wes Moore and President Donald Trump traded critical remarks about crime in Baltimore over the weekend.

The Details: Trump recently mentioned the possibility of deploying National Guard troops to other cities, such as Baltimore. Monday marks two weeks since Trump’s announcement to deploy troops to DC, and Attorney General Pam Bondi reported 1,007 arrests and 111 illegal guns seized so far. During an address in Baltimore on Aug. 21 Moore said, “Donald Trump, if you are not willing to walk our communities, keep our name out of your mouth.”  Also appearing on ‘Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan’, Moore emphasized that the National Guard is not trained for policing the streets of America, while also explaining that Trump exists in a state of “blissful ignorance,” which is “the reason that I’ve asked the President to come and join us.” Trump called the tone of Moore’s invitation “rather nasty and provocative,” saying, “As President, I would much prefer that he clean up this Crime disaster before I go there for a ‘walk.’”

Democrats Exposed: Daily Mail (Right bias) focused on commentary by Republican strategist Scott Jennings, claiming “Democrats are squealing” over being “exposed” as “crappy at running big cities.” An opinion writer for ZeroHedge (Lean Right) said “the far-left governor [Moore], just north of D.C., has watched his polling collapse as his party of leftist radicals drags Maryland into a power-bill crisis, fiscal turmoil, years of violent crime and chaos, and an ongoing sanctuary state mess,” explaining Maryland is now in the spotlight over Moore’s comments while “cornered by failure.” The writer also mentioned a post by Trump asking whether Moore lied about receiving a Bronze Star, referencing a New York Times (Lean Left) report detailing allegations of Moore’s stolen valor.

Disagreements Turn To Threats: Steve Benen (Left) writing opinion for MSNBC (Left) claimed “Trump floats radical new threats against those who say what he doesn’t want to hear.” There is “no secret of his [Trump’s] contempt for crime statistics,” according to Benen, saying “after the president militarized the nation’s capital,” he “didn’t just condemn the data” but “launched an investigation into the statistics he doesn’t like.” The writer went on to say that still “wasn’t enough” for Trump, explaining that he is now threatening officials for “pointing to official data that conflicts with his perceptions.” The writer also mentioned the claim that Trump ‘gave’ the funds to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge, saying the funds were approved by Congress and signed into law by Joe Biden before Trump’s return to the White House.
