Fetterman Checks Himself Into Hospital for Clinical Depression

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Wednesday night “to receive treatment for clinical depression,” a spokesperson said.

Key Quotes: A statement from Fetterman’s chief of staff said, “Last night, Senator John Fetterman checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to receive treatment for clinical depression. While John has experienced depression off and on throughout his life, it only became severe in recent weeks.” The statement continued: “On Monday, John was evaluated by Dr. Brian P. Monahan, the Attending Physician of the United States Congress. Yesterday, Dr. Monahan recommended inpatient care at Walter Reed. John agreed, and he is receiving treatment on a voluntary basis.”

For Context: Fetterman also checked into George Washington University Hospital on February 8 after feeling lightheaded. He was released two days later, and his office said doctors had ruled out the possibility of another stroke. Fetterman’s stroke in May 2022 led to questions about his mental fitness during his Senate race against Republican Mehmet Oz

How the Media Covered It: Coverage was prominently featured across the spectrum on Thursday. Some coverage in right-rated outlets emphasized that Fetterman was receiving hospital care “again”; the New York Post (Lean Right bias) said he was “back in a DC-area hospital.”
