Could John Fetterman Change Parties?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Commentators across the spectrum have commented on the prospect of Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) switching parties after Politico (Lean Left bias) published a report that Republicans are "quietly trying to win him over."

Politico Report: Jonathan Martin of Politico reported that "a handful of Senate Republicans" are "gently feeling out Fetterman and responding to his concerns over the prospect of defecting from the Democratic Party," according to "multiple high-level GOP officials." Martin noted that Fetterman has publicly rejected the idea of switching parties but claimed privately he hasn't ruled it out. He concluded, "But what's clear is that Fetterman's unpopularity among Democrats means he would have a better chance to return to the Senate as an independent or a Republican than in his current party."

Opinions Pushing Back: In an opinion for The Washington Post (Lean Left), Salena Zito interviewed Fetterman. Zito implied it's the Democratic Party that has changed and noted Fetterman's progressive views on abortion, LGBTQ+ issues, workers' rights, healthcare, and economics. Zito added that Fetterman said, "The party has abandoned core values in the face of TDS." Charles CW Cooke (Right) of National Review (Right) bluntly said of Politico's implication that Fetterman could change parties, "It is not going to happen." Cooke described Fetterman as a "heterodox" and "independent-minded" politician who, if elected again in 2028, could become "a useful moderating force against lunacy."

Analysis

It's a few days after the election this November, and the results have become clear: Democrats have netted the four seats they need to claim a Senate majority.

But then there's a disturbance in the force: Senate Republicans and President Donald Trump persuade Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) to switch parties or at least become an independent to ensure Republicans retain power in the chamber.

'I am a Democrat': Will Pennsylvania turn on John Fetterman?
Opinion

Sen. John Fetterman knew it was coming. The Pennsylvania Democrat knew after he stood against illegal immigration at the U.S. southern border. He knew when he advocated for Israel after the Hamas attacks on Oct. 7, 2023, and when he voted to reopen the federal government this year and last. He understood the angry pushback he would receive and how these decisions could make or break him in American politics.

John Fetterman Isn't a Republican
Opinion

There's a lot of buzz today about John Fetterman becoming a Republican. It is not going to happen. Politico's story on the matter notes:

If Fetterman does flip, according to officials who were given anonymity to talk about sensitive matters, it will be thanks in large part to his deepening friendship with a pair of senators and their high-profile spouses: Sen. Dave McCormick (R-Pa.), and his wife Dina, and Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), and her husband, Wesley.
