Iran Executes Several Men Tied to January Anti-Government Uprisings
Summary from the AllSides News Team
Reports of executions in Iran have spread in recent weeks as the United Nations said at least 21 people have been executed since the beginning of the war on February 28.
'Karate Champion': Several mainstream outlets have reported on the death of 21-year-old Sassan Azadvar, who was reportedly executed on Thursday. The Iranian judiciary's news agency, Mizan, said Azadvar was hanged for "effectively cooperating with the enemy by attacking police officers." Several media outlets, including The New York Post (Lean Right bias), Fox News (Right), and Euronews (Center), described him as a "karate champion." Politico (Lean Left) did not include this context.
'Mossad Agents': Fars News Agency, which is reportedly closely affiliated with Iran's military, and Mizan, both reported Iran executed three men on Monday who it believed were working as Mossad agents. The three reportedly were convicted for their roles in anti-government uprisings in January in the city of Mashhad. Several mainstream Western outlets, including CBS News (Lean Left) and The Guardian (Left), reported on the uprising-related executions on Monday. Euronews reported that four others were separately executed on Monday for murder convictions.

In April, the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights Agency said 657 Iranians were executed in the first three months of 2026. In December and January, as uprisings spread across Iran, Western media outlets reported a wide range of potential death tolls that reached as high as around 40,000.
