ICE Pushes Back on Allegations After 5-Year-Old's Detention Sparks Public Outcry

A 5-year-old boy was taken into custody with his father by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, after arriving home from preschool, sparking criticism and prompting ICE to refute claims that the child was being targeted.

The Details: The Department of Homeland Security officials said Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias fled when agents approached him in the family's driveway, leaving behind his 5‑year‑old son, Liam Conejo Ramos.

ICE officials said Arias was the target of the enforcement action, while critics and some local officials argue agents involved the child in the encounter. The situation has added to public confusion as media outlets report differing accounts. Media outlets report the family came from Ecuador in 2024 to seek asylum. The family's attorney said the father and son are being held at a detention center in San Antonio, Texas, and that lawyers are still trying to reach them.

"My officers stayed with the child. They cared for him. Took him to get something to eat from a drive-thru restaurant and spent hours ensuring he was taken care of," ICE Executive Assistant Director of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Marcos Charles said.

How The Media Covered It: Media coverage varied on the circumstances surrounding the detention of the 5-year-old boy. Fox News (Right bias) highlighted statements from multiple DHS officials who said ICE agents were "targeting the father, not the child," and that the father "asked to keep Ramos with him after the child's mother refused to take him."

According to multiple reports, including CNN (Lean Left) and other left-leaning media outlets, DHS attempted to have Liam go inside with his mother so she could take custody. The pregnant mother said she believed ICE was "using a five-year-old as bait" and feared she would also be detained. The Guardian (Lean left) also quoted Stenvik, who said another adult living in the household was outside during the incident and "pleaded to take care of Liam (Ramos)," but ICE declined.
