HHS Halts Federal Funding for mRNA Vaccines, Plans 'Safer, Broader' Program

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will reportedly cease federal funding for mRNA vaccine development, terminating 22 projects worth about $500 million.

The Details: The “coordinated wind-down,” announced Tuesday, follows a review of mRNA-related investments that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., data show that mRNA vaccines fail to effectively protect against upper respiratory infections like COVID-19 and influenza, and funding will shift towards “safer, broader vaccine platforms that remain effective even as viruses mutate.” Non-vaccine-focused mRNA technology will reportedly remain in use.

For Context: Kennedy has expressed skepticism about mRNA technology, pointing to the risk of vaccines becoming ineffective if the target virus mutates significantly. He is also known, as part of his “Make America Healthy” (MAHA) movement, for questioning the effectiveness of some vaccines and their side effects. Kennedy announced Tuesday that he plans to “fix” the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP).

How The Media Covered It: Media on the left frame vaccines more positively overall than media on the right, which are often in line with Kennedy’s skepticism. CBS News (Lean Left bias) highlighted criticism from infectious disease experts, who warned that the cuts could leave Americans vulnerable to new or mutating viruses. The Hill (Center) focused on the details of the policy shift without significant political slant. Washington Examiner (Lean Right) emphasized Kennedy’s rationale for the decision and included his video emphasizing limitations of mRNA vaccines; however, the outlet also noted that the cuts followed pressure from Kennedy’s supporters.

RFK Jr. halts $500 million for mRNA vaccine research
News

The federal government is calling off around $500 million worth of vaccine development projects that use mRNA technology, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Tuesday.

The 22 now-terminated projects were funded through the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or BARDA. Most of the projects that were canceled were for vaccines that fight COVID-19 or the flu, Kennedy said.

They include proposals from Pfizer, Sanofi Pasteur and other drugmakers that were rejected or canceled, along with a now-shuttered award to Moderna to develop a bird flu vaccine, according...
