DeSantis Orders Shutdown of Pro-Palestine Student Group, Sparks First Amendment Dialogue

Earlier this week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ordered the shutdown of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a group that voiced support for Hamas’ attacks on Israel, spurring media commentary.

Political Stunt: An opinion for Above The Law (Left bias) suggested DeSantis made this decision to gain popularity, as his polling numbers in the GOP primary race dwindle. The writer said if DeSantis’ concerns are over the group’s support of a “terrorist group,” he should also ban those who support the U.S. military and police, which the Center for Strategic and International Studies says participate in domestic terrorism.

Censorship Not The Answer: An opinion for The South Florida Sun Sentinel (Center bias) said the SJP is wrong for preaching hate, but so is DeSantis’ action, which it calls a First Amendment violation. The writer cited DeSantis’ crusades against LGBT themes and critical race theory in schools as similar instances where he’s been on the wrong side of free speech, but notes that most Floridians share his disgust for the PIJ’s actions.

Conservative Hypocrisy: Robby Soave (Lean Right bias) of Reason (Lean Right bias) called DeSantis’ order a free speech and First Amendment violation. Soave provided context on the state’s announcement, which said the National SJP circulated a “toolkit” to students that called Hamas’ October 7 acts of terror "a historic win for the Palestinian resistance." However, he added “conservatives who claim to oppose censorship on college campuses,” would be committing a double standard to not criticize DeSantis’ proposed shutdown.
