Trump Endorses Cuomo For NYC Mayor

The night before the New York City mayoral election, President Donald Trump endorsed former Democratic governor and current independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.

The Details: Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!” He urged New Yorkers to vote for Cuomo over the Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, writing, “A vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani.”

For Context: Trump has criticized Sliwa in the past, asking in a Fox News interview, “Is he really a Republican?” He has also threatened on multiple occasions to withhold federal funding from New York City if Mamdani wins, which he repeated in his Truth Social post.

Mamdani’s Response: At a campaign event in Queens, New York, Mamdani said, “In these final days, what was rumored, what was feared, has become naked and unabashed. The MAGA movement’s embrace of Andrew Cuomo is reflective of Donald Trump’s understanding that this would be the best mayor for him—not the best mayor for New York City, not the best mayor for New Yorkers, but the best mayor for Donald Trump and his administration.” He also posted on X, writing, “Congratulations, @AndrewCuomo. I know how hard you worked for this."
