Recapping 2022 Primary Tuesday in Massachusetts

Summary from the AllSides News Team

On Tuesday in Massachusetts' 2022 gubernatorial race, state Attorney General Maura Healey won the Democratic primary and Geoff Diehl, who was backed by former President Donald Trump, won the Republican primary.

Healey essentially ran unopposed, while Diehl beat out moderate Chris Doughty. The battle is to replace Republican Gov. Charlie Baker, who is not seeking reelection for a third term. Massachusetts will observe two weeks of early voting in late October and early November, with no excuses needed for mail-in voting. Healey is favored to win the November match up, in a state with many more adults who identify as Democrats than Republicans. Though traditionally known as a blue state, Massachusetts has elected only one Democratic governor since 1991. If victorious, Healey would become one of the first openly lesbian governors in the U.S.

Sources across the political spectrum covered the Massachusetts governor's primary race, and unsurprisingly, it was covered more prominently on the local level.

Attorney General Maura Healey, who rocketed to prominence as the state’s litigator-in-chief against Donald Trump before clearing the Democratic field for governor this year, officially captured the party’s nomination Tuesday, setting up an acrid general election fight with Geoff Diehl, a Trump acolyte whom GOP voters embraced as their gubernatorial nominee.

The results, projected by the Associated Press Tuesday night, cement the general election race to succeed Governor Charlie Baker, the state’s second-term Republican who is not seeking reelection.

The matchup will top a ballot of potentially history-making races. Healey’s...

We have a slate of candidates for the November election.

There were some expected results, including Attorney General Maura Healey’s victory march through a largely uncontested Democratic primary for governor. And conservative firebrand Geoff Diehl closed the deal on the Republican side, though opponent Chris Doughty showed a little pluck toward the end of that race, nabbing some high-profile endorsements and garnering enough votes to keep things close for about an hour after polls closed.
