What is the Impact of AI in Education?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

First Lady Melania Trump on Thursday hosted a meeting of the White House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to discuss AI’s impact on the future of education.

Key Quotes: In a press release, the First Lady said, “I won’t be surprised if AI becomes known as the greatest engine of progress in the history of the [US]. But, as leaders and parents we must manage AI’s growth responsibly…We are living in a moment of wonder, and it is our responsibility to prepare America’s children.”

For Context: In August, she invited students to participate in a nationwide, first-of-its-kind AI competition “to solve real-world problems in their communities using AI-powered solutions.” In April, President Trump signed an executive order to incorporate AI into America’s classrooms. The rapid development and integration of AI into education has generated debate about its impact on student learning.

'End of Critical Thinking’: An opinion piece in The Atlantic (Left bias) by a high school student said AI tools are “inescapable.” They gave examples of fellow students using ChatGPT in the classroom, saying, “The technology has also led students to focus on external results at the expense of internal growth.” The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board (Lean Right) shared mixed opinions on AI from college students, with one saying, “...AI-using students, especially younger children in a critical stage of development, will be more likely to struggle…[with] more complex or unconventional thinking.”

‘A Good Tutor’: A Baylor University student in The Wall Street Journal editorial said, “Improvements in student outcomes and higher test scores can be attributed to AI’s ability to offer personalized learning, immediate feedback and the breaking down of abstract concepts for students.” Another said, “Well-structured AI tutors can enhance rather than diminish problem-solving skills…The key is balance.”

Impact on Teachers: ABC News (Lean Left) highlighted warnings that AI could “widen the teacher shortage by eliminating jobs,” but it could also act as a tool. It interviewed Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield, who said, “The teacher is the most important…component of the classroom, but [AI] is a very useful tool in helping them provide the best educational environment.” Another article from The Atlantic wrote educators are using AI tools to support their existing workload, including administrative work and creating assignments.

“That’s a really thoughtful question,” ChatGPT mused in response to this question. “There’s some evidence on both sides.” This predictably insipid response from OpenAI’s chatbot is emblematic of the general smoothing-out effect that AI-powered tools inspire. As chatbots become more ubiquitous, the number of rough edges in life will slowly be smoothed out as we will all come to expect the effortless and the instantaneous.

Opinion

AI has transformed my experience of education. I am a senior at a public high school in New York, and these tools are everywhere. I do not want to use them in the way I see other kids my age using them—I generally choose not to—but they are inescapable.
