Democrats Introduce Bill To Raise Minimum Wage To $15 by 2025

Democrats in the House and Senate reintroduced legislation on Tuesday that would gradually raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2025. If passed, the Raise the Wage Act would eventually more than double the current $7.25 federal minimum wage and tie it to median wage growth beyond 2025. While the bill passed in the House in July 2020, it is unlikely to pass in the Senate without using budget reconciliation, a process which bypasses the filibuster in certain situations. Renewed efforts to raise the minimum wage have gained strength with the support of President Joe Biden, who called for a $15 minimum wage in his COVID-19 relief proposal and issued an executive order setting the stage for a $15 minimum wage for federal government workers. As of Tuesday afternoon, coverage was most prevalent in center-rated outlets and business-focused outlets. Coverage in some right- and left-rated outlets portrayed Congressional Budget Office projections on the $15 minimum wage differently, highlighting more negative or positive predictions, respectively.
