Trump Asks Supreme Court to Intervene on Mar-a-Lago Legal Battle

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The Trump legal team sent a request to the Supreme Court to review and overturn a successful appeal from the Department of Justice that granted them regained access to around 100 classified documents taken from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence during an FBI warrant search in August. Before the DOJ’s appeal was granted, a Florida judge granted a Trump team motion to appoint a third-party Special Master to review all the seized materials, roughly 11,000 documents in all.

It is unknown at this time if the Supreme Court will make a ruling on the case. The Court returned to session only days ago, featuring the newly appointed Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who was nominated by President Biden following the retirement of Justice Stephen Breyer. Currently, the Supreme Court has a conservative majority, including three Justices appointed by Former President Donald Trump. Newsweek (Center Bias) featured a number of perspectives in their coverage on how the case could play out if brought before the Court. A former federal prosecutor doubted the Court would rule in Trump’s favor, citing the narrow exception argued by the Department of Justice in their appeal, which allowed them to regain access only to the documents with markings indicating classified materials.

Coverage on the Trump team’s letter to the court was widespread. Fox News (Right Bias) featured more excerpts from the Trump team’s request letter. Associated Press (Lean Left Bias) noted Ginni Thomas, wife of Justice Clarence Thomas, a Trump supporter who believes the 2020 election was fraudulent.

The Trump team asked the justices to overturn a lower court ruling and allow the arbiter, called a special master, to review the roughly 100 documents with classification markings that were taken in the Aug. 8 search of Mar-a-Lago.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon issued an injunction against the DOJ's use of the 100 documents purportedly marked as classified to be used for investigative purposes.

The 11th Circuit overturned Cannon's order and prevented court-appointed Special Master...

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in his fight with the Justice Department over classified documents seized from his Florida home as part of a criminal investigation into his handling of government records.

Trump filed an emergency request asking the justices to block part of a lower court's ruling that prevented an independent arbiter requested by Trump, known as a special master, from vetting more than 100 documents marked as classified that were among 11,000 records seized by FBI agents at the Mar-a-Lago...
