State Dept. Report Alleges Connections Between Cuba, Civil Unrest, and DSA

The US State Department released a new report on Monday allegedly linking Cuba to the Democrat Socialists of America (DSA) and several decades of protests and unrest in America.

The Report: The 100-page report alleged connections between Havana and "powerful leftist nonprofits," saying "The Cubans devoted themselves to recruiting, cultivating and mobilizing a global coalition of activists, intellectuals, and political groups" around what the report called "a new and distinct kind of Marxism, forged around an overriding resentment and fundamental hatred of the United States and the broader West."

Willing Vector Of Communist Influence: Outlets on the right, like Fox News (Right bias) and Just The News (Lean Right), highlighted the aspects of the report alleging the "deep connections" between the DSA and organizations connected to Cuban intelligence. Just The News said that the report warned that the DSA "serves as a willing vector of Cuban Communist influence." Fox News framed much of the article around the report arguing "that Cuba's campaign reached far beyond traditional espionage," explaining that "Havana cultivated American activists, recruited spies, supported revolutionary movements and built relationships with universities and advocacy groups as part of a long-term effort to undermine U.S. interests and spread communist ideology."

Suspicious Emphasis On Race: Outlets on the left, like The Guardian (Left) and The Washington Post (Lean Left), tended to frame the report amid "talk of U.S. push for regime change." The Washington Post article said that "The threat posed by Cuba is described in far more dire terms than those employed by U.S. intelligence officials and State Department diplomats over several decades, reviving speculation that the Trump administration is establishing a pretext for overthrowing the communist government in Havana," adding that this has been "a longtime goal of Secretary of State Marco Rubio." The Guardian said the report "jar[s] with [the] reality of hunger and blackouts," and asserts without evidence, the report shows a "suspicious emphasis on race" by detailing successful intelligence infiltration in the US was due to a soft spot for "glamorous Latins."
