Pentagon Orders 'Rare' Meeting With Military Commanders

The Pentagon ordered top military officials from across the globe to meet in Virginia next week for a meeting.

The Details: The meeting, reportedly involving all senior officers with the rank of brigadier general or above, and the Navy equivalent, is expected to bring about 800 generals and admirals together. The Pentagon has not offered any details on the meeting outside of saying Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is “addressing his senior military leaders.”

For Context: The meeting is reportedly raising concerns, as those ordered to attend do not know the reason for the meeting, and some worry it could coincide with Hegseth’s directive in May to cut 20% of the military's four-star generals and admirals. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance both voiced that the meeting is “not unusual,” saying, “I think it’s odd that you guys have made it into such a big story.”

How The Media Covered It: The Washington Post (Lean Left bias) was the first to report on the “rare” and “urgent” meeting. The Post also noted “Hegseth’s overtly political moves have deepened a sense of distress among his opponents who fear that he is erasing the Defense Department’s status as a nonpartisan institution.” Reuters (Center) also highlighted the uncertainty of those called to attend and referenced Hegseth’s directive to reduce military leaders. Fox News (Right) called the meeting “unprecedented” and “highly unusual,” noting that it is unusual to have a meeting of this size and scope in person, saying usually it would “take place on a secure video teleconference.” While Fox also noted Hegseth’s plans to cut a percentage of senior officers, the outlets also said the meeting could entail preparations for “a new national defense strategy that makes homeland defense a top priority.”
