Nuclear Official Investigated for Disclosing Gov't Secrets to Suspected Undercover Journalist
Summary from the AllSides News Team
Andrew Hugg, a senior US nuclear official, was suspended after allegedly revealing secret government information to a stranger in a public restaurant.
The Details: Footage released by the Citizen Journalism Foundation, showed Hugg speaking to a woman–a suspected undercover journalist–about nuclear launch procedures, chemical weapons research and the ongoing US-Iranian war. Daily Wire (Right bias) reported Hugg believed these were casual dates. According to James O'Keefe, founder of O'Keefe Media Group which owns Citizen Journalism Foundation, Hugg claimed the US still possessed nerve agents, alleged foreign aid funds under the Obama administration were misappropriated and described how the US could assassinate Iran's next leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. Hugg also said the US has no plans to use nuclear weapons.
AllSides did not find much initial coverage from mainstream outlets.
Security Concern: International Business Times (Center), Daily Wire and The Post Millennial (Right) all contextualized the finding within rising global tensions and concerns around who's in charge of government security. Post Millennial wrote the film has "raised questions about operational security and the handling of sensitive information" by security personnel. Daily Wire wrote, "broader lapses in training, oversight, or internal safeguards" are yet to be seen.
'Mesmerizing' Encounter: International Business Times noted Hugg "appeared to be swayed by the woman's appearance." It quoted him saying, "You're not a spy right?...Your eyes have mesmerized me so much…That's why the easiest way to get intelligence [is to] like just send a pretty girl to talk to the guy."
Other Media Coverage: Snopes (Lean Left) described the findings as a "rumor" and emphasized it was unable to verify claims Hugg shared sensitive information.
