Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in prison for sexual assault against a production assistant in 2006. Outlets across the political spectrum linked Weinstein to the #MeToo movement and past trials relating to sex crimes.

The Details: Weinstein was convicted in Wednesday's trial for the sexual assault of Miriam Haley, a former production assistant for the TV show "Project Runway," in 2006 at his apartment in Manhattan. The prosecution asked for a 20-year sentence with five years of supervision after release, while Weinstein's defense attorneys asked for a shorter nine-year sentence due to his severe health conditions, including blood cancer and heart disease. Presiding Judge Curtis Farber called Weinstein "the literal face of the #MeToo movement" and told him, "Your legacy could have been cemented with greatness. But you threw it all away by assaulting Miriam Haley."

For Context: Weinstein was originally sentenced to 23 years in prison after a jury in a 2020 trial convicted him of sexually assaulting Haley as well as raping actor Jessica Mann. However, New York's highest court overturned the convictions in 2024, calling the trial "prejudiced" because the judge allowed women who were not the plaintiffs in the case to testify about their own experiences of sexual assault with Weinstein.
