Luigi Mangione's federal case is set for an emergency conference Friday, fueling speculation the murder suspect could be negotiating a plea deal just weeks before his state trial is set to begin.

Mangione is expected to plead guilty, the New York Times reported, citing unnamed sources.

Federal prosecutors and Mangione's defense team filed a joint one-page letter requesting the conference, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday.

The filing came just hours after a state court hearing where a judge confirmed jury selection in Mangione's state murder case will begin Sept. 8, with an anonymous jury.
