Fact Check Team: Understanding President Trump's education overhaul and budget cuts

Concerns and questions are mounting following President Donald Trump's signing of an executive order to begin dismantling the Department of Education and shift control to the states. While the order initiates the process, it would take an act of Congress to completely shut the department down.

"I agree with President Trump that the Department of Education has failed its mission. Since the Department can only be shut down with Congressional approval, I will support the President’s goals by submitting legislation to accomplish this as soon as possible," Senator Bill Cassidy, R-La., posted Thursday on X.
