The first batch of British aid due to reach Gaza by a temporary pier left Cyprus last night.

The initial contribution of nearly 100 tonnes of plastic sheeting to make shelters should reach refugees within days.

Rishi Sunak heralded the UK's contribution to the maritime corridor and construction of the pier off Gaza's coastline.

The Prime Minister said: 'The UK has been working around the clock with our allies and partners to ensure more aid gets into Gaza via all possible routes.

'We know more is required. We will continue efforts to unlock more routes to get vital aid to people in desperate need.'
