UN Security Council Passes Call For Gaza Cease-Fire After U.S. Abstains

The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza during Ramadan on Monday morning—though the U.S. abstained from the vote.

The resolution passed with 14 votes in favor, the New York Times reported, with the U.S. being the only member country that did not vote.

The resolution also calls for the release of all hostages being held by Hamas, but it does not tie the release to the immediate cease-fire, according to the UN.

Resolutions passed by the UN Security Council are legally binding, meaning the order must be carried out.

The vote comes after the Security Council failed to pass a U.S.-backed resolution on Friday that called for a cease-fire after Russia and China vetoed its passage.
