Rishi Sunak has said the UK 'discourages' the use of cluster bombs after the US last night announced the weapons would be sent to Kyiv to help with its counter-offensive against Russian forces.
Cluster munitions are prohibited by 123 countries, including the UK. They typically release large numbers of smaller bomblets that can kill indiscriminately over a wide area. Those that fail to explode pose a danger for decades.
Mr Sunak said the UK was signed up to the convention banning their use, and wanted to instead focus on supplying Kyiv with tanks and long-range weapons.
Joe Biden defended his 'difficult decision' to supply the besieged country with cluster bombs as 'the Ukrainians are running out of ammunition'.
