A video clip is circulating online showing a border fence overwhelmed by hundreds of people trying to climb to the other side. Social media users are circulating the clip alongside claims that the footage is of the border separating the United States and Mexico. This is false. The border fence shown in the video clip separates Melilla, an autonomous Spanish city in North Africa, from Morocco.
Both Spanish and American media outlets reported attempts by hundreds of migrants to climb the fence and gain entry to Melilla in March 2022. The clip in question, which depicts the Melilla border crisis of March 2022, is being circulated and miscaptioned by American social media accounts in the context of the upcoming expiration of Title 42 on May 11. Title 42 is a Trump administration policy that allows border officials to turn away migrants seeking to enter the U.S. from Mexico without allowing them to claim asylum status.
