Voters appear to support a plan overwhelmingly by GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley to require mental competency tests for politicians over 75.

A poll from Fox News conducted from Feb. 19-22 shows 77% of the 1,006 registered voters surveyed support the plan, while only 20% say they disapprove of the proposal.

The proposal by Haley appears to target President Joe Biden, 80, and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, 76, who are the only major likely or declared presidential candidates over the age of 75.

Trump has come out in favor of the plan, adding that anyone who is running for the presidency should be mandated to take a mental competency test. Former Democratic presidential candidate and Sen. Bernie Sanders, 81, (I-VT) called the proposal "absurd" and said that "we should also be fighting ageism."

The idea for mental competency tests for older politicians is part of Haley's wider call for a new generation of leaders in government, arguing that many politicians in leadership are past their prime.
