A gas explosion heavily damaged a maternity and children’s hospital here on Thursday, leaving at least three people dead and dozens wounded, some by broken glass, the authorities said.
A total of 54 people were wounded, officials said, including 22 children, at the Hospital Materno Infantil on the western outskirts of the city. Mayor Miguel Mancera said most of the injuries were minor, while Luis Felipe Puente, the city’s civil defense director, said about 20 children were taken to hospitals for burn injuries of varying severity.
Later, as the debris was searched, three bodies were found, two men and a woman, officials said. The search was continuing.
