Zelenskyy Meets Biden in Washington

Summary from the AllSides News Team

In his first known trip outside Ukraine since Russia's invasion began in February, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C. and delivered a message to Americans about the war effort.

Key Quotes: "I wish you peace, and, of course, to be together with us," said Zelenskyy in an address to Americans at a press conference after their meeting. "We will win, and I really want to win together. Not 'want.' Sorry. I am sure." He added that "Regardless of the changes in the Congress, I believe there will be bipartisan and bicameral support," and that his visit shows the "situation is under control." Biden pledged "unequivocal and unbending support" and said Americans "understand in our bones that Ukraine’s fight is part of something much bigger."

The Details: Earlier in the day., the Department of Defense (DoD) announced another $1.85 billion in military aid for Ukraine. The package features $1 billion in U.S. weapons and equipment, including the first shipment of the advanced surface-to-air Patriot missile battery, and $850 million in funding by way of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, through which the DoD "procures capabilities from industry rather than delivering equipment that is drawn" from its own stocks. The U.S. has now committed nearly $22 billion in security aid to Ukraine since Biden took office.

How the Media Covered It: Zelenskyy's visit was a top story from news sources across the political spectrum Wednesday evening.
