UN Says Sudan at 'Catastrophic Breaking Point', US to Lead Peace Talks
Summary from the AllSides News Team
Sudan erupted in civil war in April 2023 when the paramilitary group the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) engaged in open conflict in the capital city, spreading throughout the country.
Worsening Conditions: The war has created the world's largest displacement crisis, with more than 10.7 million people forced to flee their homes, and recent flooding has added to the turmoil. According to the United Nations, "about 25.6 million people—over half of the population of Sudan—face acute hunger, including more than 755,000 people on the brink of famine." "Without an immediate, massive and coordinated global response, we risk witnessing tens of thousands of preventable deaths in the coming months,” said Othman Belbeisi, the International Organization for Migration’s regional director.
Peace Talks: The U.S. and Saudi Arabia are set to begin peace talks tomorrow in Switzerland with the RSF, but the SAF has not yet agreed to participate. “If SAF does not attend—[in which case] we continue to focus on the international and technical elements. This is a tremendous gathering of experts and we are going to move forward. If SAF changes its mind and wants to participate, we will then be able to have…that mediated component," said Tom Perriello, the US special envoy for Sudan.
