Explosives Tossed at Mamdani's Home in Suspected 'ISIS-Inspired' Attack; 2 People Charged

Two suspects reportedly attempted to launch explosive devices during a protest in front of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's (D-NY) home.

The Details: The city's bomb squad determined the "improvised explosive device [could] have caused serious injury or death" and will be analyzed further, along with a second device found, according to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Police arrested the suspects, Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, on Saturday and launched an investigation with the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force. Federal charges are set to be imposed on the suspects on Monday. 

Potential Motives: The protest itself was reportedly anti-Islam, as Mamdani and his wife are both Muslim. It was led by right-wing influencer Jake Lang and met with large counterprotests. Balat, an 18-year-old Turkish-American, used the Islamic phrase "Allahu Akbar" and suggested the attempted attack was a response to anti-Islamic rhetoric, according to law enforcement. Balat, who reportedly consumed Islamic terror propaganda prior to the attempted attack, held up ISIS' signature hand salute and smiled at reporters while being detained. The suspects' actions are "being investigated as an act of ISIS-inspired terrorism," according to Tisch.

How The Media Covered It: Several outlets on the left focused on the anti-Islamic protest and often glossed over Balat and Kayumi's identities and potential terroristic motives. The Guardian's (Left bias) headline, for example, highlighted the "anti-Islam protest" rather than the allegedly radical Islamic attempted attack. Some outlets on the right did the opposite. Blaze Media's (Right) headline highlighted Balat's use of the phrase "Allahu Akbar" and framed the protest as "anti-Mamdani" instead of anti-Islam.

The Difference: Outlets on the left often emphasize angles of potential racism when victims are minorities and attackers are white and/or members of law enforcement. Outlets on the right often emphasize racial angles when attackers are Muslim and/or unauthorized immigrants.
