US Earned $106 Billion From Tariffs Since Trump Took Office

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The U.S. has reportedly collected $106 billion from tariffs since President Donald Trump took office.

Key Details: According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) documents reviewed by Axios (Lean Left bias), the customs revenue has been earned since January 20th and comes from taxes, fees, and tariffs (the vast majority coming from tariffs). The Treasury Department said the federal government had collected $81.4 billion this fiscal year - almost $32 billion ahead of last year at this time.

For Context: Trump has pushed for better trade terms with other nations by imposing tariffs on many imported goods, including steel and aluminum. He can keep his tariffs in place while they're being challenged in the courts.

How the Media Covered It: The Washington Times (Lean Right bias) reported that "economists had warned that the tariffs would spur inflation and plunge the country into recession. Neither prediction has been borne out so far." Axios noted that at current levels, the administration's own estimates of $300 billion will be surpassed.

The U.S. has now collected more than $100 billion in customs revenue since President Trump took office, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: The vast majority of that is from tariffs, as Trump's trade policy begins to generate substantial income for the government.

Driving the news: Total customs revenue from actions taken since Jan. 20 — including tariffs, taxes and fees — hit $106.1 billion as of last Friday, according to Customs and Border Protection documents seen by Axios.

Most of that, $81.5 billion in total, is from tariffs imposed since Jan. 20.

The Department of Homeland Security has collected more than $106 billion in tariff revenue since President Trump took office, and most of that — $81.5 billion — is directly tied to the new levies the president has imposed on worldwide goods.

The department announced the eye-popping totals late Monday, saying it’s evidence of Mr. Trump’s America First trade policy in action.

Mr. Trump had teased the number last week in a press conference with reporters.

“They have so much money coming in,” he said.
