Trump Admin Cites Trade 'Discrimination'; Announces 50% Tariff On Canada

The Trump administration on Monday announced the imposition of a 50% tariff on certain Canadian imports over what officials called trade "discrimination" against American businesses.

The Duties: The new tariff is expected to take effect on Aug. 19 and will target a wide range of Canadian goods, including industrial goods, synthetic materials, wearables, and various food products. However, energy products, critical minerals, fish, and other goods that are already subject to other industry-specific duties like cars and metals are exempt from the tariff.

Reignite A Trade Battle: Outlets on the left, like CNN Business (Lean Left bias) tended to highlight Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which is a law allowing the president to impose tariffs up to 50% when a country discriminates against American goods, explaining however, that "the law has never been applied this way." CNN Business framed the tariff announcement as "threatening to reignite a trade battle with one of America's closest allies and top economic partners." Canadian outlet CBC News (Lean Left) echoed this sentiment, calling the tariff "a dramatic ramping up of his trade war against his [Trump's] northern neighbor."   

Unfairly Target US: Outlets on the right like Fox Business (Lean Right), conversely, tended to focus on justifications for the tariff from US officials. The article, highlighting part of a presidential proclamation for the tariff, said "The United States, U.S. businesses and workers, and U.S. commerce suffer from Canada's discriminatory, unequal, and unreasonable tariff scheme." Fox Business also cited officials saying that "Canada's current trade policies unfairly target three U.S. sectors — vehicle, dairy and alcohol exports — contributing to a significant decline in American sales while giving foreign competitors an advantage."

Canadian Wildfire Smoke: President Donald Trump threatened added tariffs on Canada Friday over smoke from large wildfires drifting into the US. CNN Business mentioned this, saying that "officials said the latest tariffs are unrelated."

Canadian Response: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that Canada stood ready to "intensify" trade talks with the US in coming weeks. Carney on X called the move "the latest in a series of unilateral U.S. trade actions that began with the U.S. imposing a series of tariffs in direct violation of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), the free trade agreement between Canada, the United States, and Mexico."
