Biden Imposes Sanctions on Russia Over Cyberattacks and Election Interference, Declares 'National Emergency'

The Biden administration announced new sanctions against Russia on Thursday, declaring that Russia’s SolarWinds cyberattack, election interference and other actions amounted to a “national emergency.” The sanctions prohibited U.S. companies from buying or lending Russian-issued bonds, expelled 10 Russian diplomats from the U.S., and sanctioned 32 Russian entities and individuals for election interference as well as eight entities and individuals involved in Russia’s occupation of Crimea. The move also came as Russia built up its military presence near the Ukrainian border, raising fears of an invasion. Coverage in right-rated outlets was less common and tended to focus on Biden’s “national emergency” declaration. Coverage in left- and center-rated outlets was often featured prominently on homepages and focused on the sanctions themselves.
