McCarthy Floats Biden Impeachment Inquiry

On Monday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) suggested that House Republicans may open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden over his foreign business dealings.

Key Details: The White House is condemning McCarthy’s comments as "baseless," and maintaining that President Biden was never involved in foreign business deals with his son, Hunter. 

Key Quote: “When Biden was running for office, he told the public he has never talked about business. He said his family has never received a dollar from China, which we prove is not true,” McCarthy told Fox News primetime anchor Sean Hannity.

For Context: McCarthy has suggested an impeachment inquiry against Attorney General Merrick Garland, but this is the closest he has come to suggesting an impeachment inquiry against  Biden. An inquiry would be a lengthy process, but some Republicans think it could yield evidence to strengthen an impeachment case. At the same time, moderate Republicans in swing-districts might not support impeachment of President Biden, and the House isn't ready to vote on impeachment yet.

How the Media Covered it: Sources on the right and left noted that McCarthy's comments came after reports that Devon Archer, a former business associate of Hunter Biden, was set to testify before Congress and allege that Joe Biden was present on business phone calls with his son Hunter and international business associates.
