House Removes Marjorie Taylor Greene From Committees

The U.S. House of Representatives voted to remove Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) from the Education and Budget committees on Thursday evening. Led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the House voted 230-199, with 11 Republicans joining every Democrat, to remove Greene because of social media activity in support of conspiracy theories, bigotry, and violence, including violence against Pelosi. In a floor speech on Thursday afternoon, Greene backtracked some of her previous statements, saying she believed school shootings are “real” and “9/11 absolutely happened” after expressing skepticism over both the 9/11 terrorist attack and the Sandy Hook elementary school and Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School shootings. “These were words of the past and these things do not represent me,” Greene said, claiming the media distorted her views, and equating the media to conspiracy group QAnon. In a Wednesday meeting with House Republicans, Greene also apologized for having subscribed to some QAnon conspiracy theories. The story received wide coverage from outlets across the political spectrum. Left- and center-rated outlets tended to focus on Greene's past comments; some left-rated outlets highlight the fact that Greene did not apologize for her comments. Some right-rated outlets tended to highlight remarks from GOP members who warned that removing Greene by majority vote would set a dangerous precedent for the House.
