Washington Post Hit With Multiple Controversies

Summary from the AllSides News Team

A series of controversies hit The Washington Post (Lean Left bias) in recent weeks.

The Post's policies came under scrutiny after a jury found that Amber Heard defamed Johnny Depp in a 2018 Post op-ed detailing her alleged experiences with abuse. It was also revealed during the Depp-Heard trial that the American Civil Liberties Union (Lean Left bias) wrote the op-ed. Then, Post reporter Taylor Lorenz was accused of falsely claiming she reached out to sources for a story she wrote on the Depp-Heard trial. The Post stealth-edited her story to remove the claim, before later adding an editor's note admitting that Lorenz's claim was incorrect and that the stealth-edit violated its corrections policy.

And finally, Post reporter Dave Weigel was suspended after retweeting a post that said "Every girl is bi. You just have to figure out if it's polar or sexual." Fellow Post reporter Felicia Sonmez shared Weigel's post, and said sarcastically that it's "Fantastic to work at a news outlet where retweets like this are allowed!"

Sources across the spectrum highlighted the controversies and the Post's response. Coverage from the right focused more on the Lorenz story and the Heard op-ed, and framed the Post as biased and irresponsible. Reports from left- and center-rated sources focused more on Weigel's tweet and the internal fallout; few covered the Lorenz story or the Heard op-ed like many right-rated sources did.

On Tuesday afternoon, Washington Post reporter Josh Dawsey tweeted that he was “proud” to work at the paper, a place “filled with many terrific people who are smart and collegial.” Four minutes later, reporter Rosalind Helderman, too, tweeted that she was “proud” to work at the Post, which is “always striving to be better than it was yesterday.” Six minutes later, another reporter, Amy Gardner, tweeted how she was “proud” to work at the paper, followed by other top journalists at the publication, such as Matt Viser, Carol Leonnig, and Dan Balz.

The public outpouring of Post pride—which I’m told political reporters were urging one another to take part in—followed executive editor Sally Buzbee’s memo...

It didn’t start with a retweet.

The controversy currently swirling around The Washington Post doesn’t go back days. It goes back years.

If you want to truly understand how one of the most respected news organizations in the world is smack dab in the middle of a hot mess, you can’t start with a high-profile reporter retweeting a sexist and homophobic tweet. You have to look at the history of the reporter who objected to that retweet and her relationship with the paper she works for, as well as the...

Analysis

The paper known for its slogan "Democracy Dies in Darkness" should perhaps be more concerned about its own well-being after the disastrous week it had.

The Washington Post, the once-revered news organization that famously exposed the Watergate scandal leading to a president's resignation, is still highly respected in the Beltway but has lost its way in recent years among most Americans. From declaring the coronavirus lab-leak theory was a "debunked" "conspiracy" to quickly rejecting the Hunter Biden laptop scandal in the final weeks of the 2020 presidential election, the Post...
