Unredacted Emails Using Pseudonyms for Joe Biden Requested by House GOP

Summary from the AllSides News Team

House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer (R-KY) asked the National Archives for unredacted emails from Joe Biden's time as vice president, some of which appear to refer to Biden with pseudonyms.

The Details: Comer requested messages related to the Ukrainian gas company Burisma, which Hunter Biden sat on the board of at the time. Some of the emails reportedly refer to then-Vice President Joe Biden as "Robert L. Peters" and other names. One email, on which Hunter was CC'd, mentions a conversation between Biden and then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

For Context: Some suspect that Joe Biden had been pressuring Poroshenko to fire Ukraine’s prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, at the time of that call in 2016. Shokin had been investigating Burisma, which paid over $3 million to Hunter Biden's investment firm between 2014 and 2015. The president has maintained that he wasn't involved in Hunter's foreign business deals; Hunter's former business partner has testified to the contrary. There's not yet any evidence of criminal wrongdoing by Joe Biden in regards to his son's business dealings. Last week, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to investigate Hunter.

How the Media Covered it: Only one left-rated source, Mediaite (Lean Left bias), had covered Comer's request at the time of this writing. Some right-rated sources highlighted the news as a top story on Friday, and often framed it as more reason to believe that the Bidens engaged in illegal conduct with foreign businesses.
