Kilmar Abrego Garcia Charged With Transporting Unauthorized Immigrants Into US
Summary from the AllSides News Team
Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been charged with transporting unauthorized immigrants into the US, and will return from detainment in El Salvador to face the charges.
The Details: Abrego Garcia was allegedly part of a years-long conspiracy to transport of thousands of noncitizens from Mexico and Central America in exchange for thousands of dollars, according to the unsealed indictment. Per anonymous sources cited by ABC News (Lean Left), Abrego Garica participated in over 100 such trips, some of which allegedly transported children and members of the Salvadoran gang MS-13.
For Context: In March, Abrego Garcia was deported to El Salvador despite a judge's order granting him temporary protection. The Trump administration admitted the error but maintained that Abrego Garcia is a member of MS-13. Last month, bodycam footage emerged from a 2022 traffic stop in which Abrego Garcia was pulled over for speeding with eight other people in the vehicle. None of the individuals had luggage, and all listed the same address as Abrego Garcia, who said the group was working construction in Missouri. How the Media Covered It: "Garcia has become the poster boy for the left in accusations that the Trump administration's deportation efforts have bent or broken the laws on migrants and their due process rights," according to The Blaze (Right bias). ABC highlighted a statement from Abrego Garcia's lawyer, who said, "We're not just fighting for Kilmar -- we're fighting to ensure due process rights are protected for everyone. Because tomorrow, this could be any one of us -- if we let power go unchecked, if we ignore our Constitution." Left- and center-rated sources often highlighted Abrego Garcia's wrongful removal in their headlines or early in their articles; right-rated outlets didn't.
