ICE Agents in Chicago, Portland and NYC Involved in Violent Confrontations
Summary from the AllSides News Team
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol are facing renewed criticism following multiple incidents involving alleged use of force by its officers during operations in Chicago, Portland, and New York. The ongoing operations have led to widespread protests, as critics accuse ICE of unnecessary violence, and ICE leaders defend the actions amid unrest.
In Chicago: On Sept. 26, Broadview Mayor Katrina R. Thompson sent a letter to ICE Chicago Field Office Director Russell Hott accusing ICE officers of “making war” against immigration protestors by deploying tear gas, pepper spray, mace, and rubber bullets. TIME (Lean Left bias) described a Sept. 30 ICE operation as a “military-style raid.” It quoted Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) describing federal agents as “separating children from their parents, zip-tying their hands, and detaining them in ‘dark vans’ for hours.”
The Response: Fox News (Right) covered ICE Director Todd Lyons accusing Thompson of "distorting reality” and arguing that “local inaction has enabled agitators to escalate violence.” The outlet said the ICE processing center in Broadview “has been at the center of chaotic protests for weeks” with protesters blocking law enforcement vehicles and shouting threats against officers. On Oct. 4, Border Patrol agents shot an armed woman in Broadview who allegedly used her vehicle to strike a US Customs and Border Protection agent's car and box in the vehicles of other agents.
New York Video: An ICE officer was “relieved” of his duties after videos surfaced on Sept. 25 appearing to show him shove a woman who was accosting him at a New York City immigration court. CNN (Lean Left) highlighted how a DHS official said “The officer’s conduct in this video is unacceptable and beneath the men and women of ICE.”
Portland Protests: On Oct. 5, a viral video showed ICE officers wheeling an ICE protester in Oregon away on a flatbed platform cart with their hands restrained behind their back. In its coverage, Fox News mentioned the protests in Chicago, while Daily Mail (Right) described ongoing protests in Portland. Daily Beast (Left) described ICE’s flatbed cart tactic as "bizarre" and the video as "disturbing." It wrote that ICE has “repeatedly caught flak for producing videos that tout their harsh crackdown on immigrants.”
