Summary from the AllSides News Team
Actress Dasha Nekrasova was dropped by her talent agency, Gersh, earlier this month and lost her role in a forthcoming film after she hosted right-wing commentator Nick Fuentes on her podcast, sparking media dialogue on cancel culture and free speech.
For Context: The scrutiny arose after a campaign to notify Gersh of Nekrasova's purportedly controversial interviews and takes on her show, Red Scare. Nekrasova had Fuentes on her podcast on October 21, and Deadline (Lean Left bias) reported on November 14 that Nekrasova had been released by Gersh.
Overdue Cancelation: Fran Hoepfner of New York Magazine (Left) published an opinion titled "Hollywood finally listened to Red Scare" that proclaimed, "Woke is back, or at least back enough for Dasha Nekrasova to face repercussions for sentences that came out of her mouth." Hoepfner wrote, "[the episode] reportedly features a number of offensive comments and stereotypes about various ethnic and religious communities. So a normal Red Scare episode." Hoepfner said Nekrasova getting cut from Gersh was a "surprise" and that with the help of "Mel Gibson or one of Trump's Hollywood ambassadors," she would likely be back in Hollywood films soon.
'Creepy' Campaign: Robby Soave (Lean Right) of Reason (Center) called the campaign to cancel Nekrasova a "creepy crusade" and said she is "a victim of one of the more bizarre cancel culture stories in recent memory." Soave highlighted that Red Scare was founded as a left-wing podcast but has since "drifted undeniably rightward… interviewing guests more associated with the dissident right." The bizarre part of the story, Soave says, is that an individual named Jonathan Daniel Brown, who was profiled by The Hollywood Reporter (Lean Left), reportedly emailed Gersh about Nekrasova repeatedly for years without response, but was successful in getting the attention of a Deadline reporter in recent weeks, leading to her axing. Soave concluded, "Gersh is not obligated to maintain Nekrasova as a client… But I am also against weirdos weaponizing professional grievance culture to silence or punish other people. Brown's behavior is creepy and should be stigmatized as such."
