What is the Federal Government Doing to Provide Hurricane Helene Relief?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Hurricane Helene has caused billions of dollars worth of damage and over 200 deaths. Some are asking if President Biden and the federal government are doing enough to help.

Relief Efforts: On Saturday, Biden issued a major disaster declaration, allowing states to access emergency funds through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and deploying hundreds of FEMA officials. Biden also ordered 1,000 soldiers to North Carolina. Some have called for Congress to convene an emergency session to pass a disaster relief bill that would provide extra funds, but House Speaker Mike Johnson said, "Congress has previously provided the funds it [FEMA] needs to respond, so we will make sure that those resources are appropriately allocated."

The Criticism: Voices on the right criticized Biden and Harris for not visiting sites of the hurricane damage. The Biden administration said Biden would visit “as soon as it will not disrupt emergency response operations.” Trump visited Georgia on Monday. Trump said Biden was “sleeping” at his beach house in Delaware and criticized Harris for campaigning in California during the hurricane. Harris did cut those events short, and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said he had spoken to Biden and gotten everything he asked for. Trump also accused the Biden administration of going out of its way not to help conservative areas, which the White House denied.

How the Media Covered It: While some voices on the right have echoed criticism of Biden and uplifted Trump's visit to Georgia, several voices on the left criticized Trump for invoking politics.

At least 130 deaths in six states have been attributed to the storm, and the death toll continues to climb. On Monday afternoon, two million homes and businesses were still without power, and floods continued...

Former President Donald Trump criticized the Biden administration’s response to the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, even as his supporters have called for cuts to federal agencies that warn of weather disasters and deliver relief to hard-hit communities.

As president, Trump delayed disaster aid for hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico and diverted money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in order to finance an effort to return undocumented migrants to Mexico. And Project 2025, backed by Trump supporters, would restructure FEMA to limit aid to states and says that the National Weather Service, which provides crucial data...

Americans throughout several southeastern states are enduring catastrophic devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. So naturally, America’s lamebrain Democrat president and vice president are missing in action.

After making landfall in Florida late last week, the Category 4 hurricane ripped across the Southeast over the weekend, producing massive flooding and mudslides. At least 110 people across six states are reported to have been killed as of Sunday night, according to The New York Times.
