Public EV Chargers Have Doubled During Biden's Presidency as Industry Remains in Flux

Summary from the AllSides News Team

"There are over 192,000 publicly available charging ports with approximately 1,000 new public chargers being added each week," the Energy Department said in a press release.

The Details: A lack of chargers has been a hurdle in the widespread adoption of EVs. The progress on charging ports is due to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed in 2021, which authorized $7.5 billion to build an EV charging network. On Tuesday, the Biden administration announced $521 million in grants to build out electric vehicle charging.

For Context: Ford recently scrapped their plan for an electric SUV. Meanwhile, Hyundai is doubling its hybrid collection as the demand for EVs wanes. Other EV companies appear to be struggling, with multiple EV startups going bankrupt and a Swedish EV company, Polestar, recently changing CEOs amid financial turmoil. General Motors also recently announced it would delay production at a planned EV battery plant in Indiana in its latest pullback.

How the Media Covered It: Coverage of the increasing charging ports and Biden's subsequent grant announcement has been sparse on the left and right, but in coverage of EVs in general, the right tends to be more critical, arguing that governments cannot drive the transition to EVs without public demand.
