Who Voted For Zohran? How Mamdani Secured His Election Win

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani won Tuesday’s election with just over 50% of the vote, prompting media across the spectrum to analyze the coalition of voters that delivered his victory.

Brooklyn Coalition: The Washington Times (Lean Right bias) wrote that Mamdani “drew votes from a diverse coalition of voters” that “took strong roots in Brooklyn neighborhoods chock-full of young, diverse people.” “These voters drove him to victory by coming out in droves,” The Times wrote, “Nevertheless, he credited mostly blue-collar working people.” The Times noted that Mamdani won the black vote, which broke for former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the primary, and dominated among voters with college degrees and transplants who recently moved to New York.

Young Women, Middle Class: Deseret News (Center) opened its coverage by noting that Mamdani won 84% of female voters aged 18-29. Deseret also noted a class divide between Mamdani and Cuomo voters. It wrote that while Mamdani’s campaign promises were “seemingly geared toward the working class,” Cuomo “ultimately won the support of the city’s poorest residents.” Deseret noted that according to CNN (Lean Left) exit polls, “Mamdani won the majority of adults who earn between $30,000 and $299,999, annually. Those poorer and richer than that favored Cuomo.”

Minorities, Trump Voters: The Guardian (Left) published an interview with Michael Lange, a New York-born political analyst who predicted Mamdani would win. Lange said Mamdani “built the coalition that the left always wanted to build: it’s multiracial, it’s young, it’s renters, and it’s people squeezed by affordability.” Lange noted that Mamdani increased his numbers with blacks and Latinos, which he lost in the primary, and “further maximized his base of liberal progressives, young leftists, and Muslims and South Asians.” Lange also said Mamdani won some minority voters in “immigrant strongholds” who voted for President Donald Trump last year. “I wouldn’t say he was winning over white working-class voters and MAGA voters,” he added.
