Trump Announces Plans for $15B Iowa Steel Plant

Summary from the AllSides News Team

President Trump on Monday released plans to build a new $15 billion steel plant in eastern Iowa – the largest of its kind in US history.

The Details: Mesabi Metallics, a Minnesota-based mining and steel company, said it was investing $15 billion to build the plant. Production is expected to begin in 2030 and will create an estimated 1,750 full-time jobs, according to the White House. Mesabi Metallics told CNBC (Lean Left bias) that the iron ore will come from a recently opened mine in Minnesota, and the plant would be "100% American steel: mined, melted, and poured in Minnesota and Iowa." According to the Wall Street Journal (Center), the first phase of the Iowa steel plant is estimated to produce roughly 7.5 million tons of steel per year and eventually move up to 10 million tons annually.

For Context: Trump announced 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports at the beginning of his second presidential term and recently upped it to 50%.

Ahead of Elections: Many outlets framed the announcement as coming ahead of the midterms. CNBC said the midterm election is "poised to be shaped by Americans' increasingly sour views of Trump's handling of the economy." The Wall Street Journal reported Trump was joined by several Iowa Republican candidates who face tough races, which it said put "the political angle of the event on display."

Praise from Manufacturing Companies: Fox Business (Lean Right) highlighted support for the "all-American supply chain" being created. It quoted Kevin Dempsey, the CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute, who said the US became the third-largest steel producer in the world last year and praised Trump's policies for "rebuild[ing] and strengthen[ing] our manufacturing sector." Dempsey also outlined a plan where the US would export more steel to other countries in the future. Wall Street Journal reported that while critics have blamed Trump's tariffs for an increase in steel prices, numerous steel trade groups said the tariffs have generated $47 billion in "announced and underway investment." They reportedly urged Trump not to weaken the tariffs because it would "put that progress at risk."

Trump Falls Asleep: New Republic (Left) described what it said was Trump falling asleep during the announcement. It reported that as Energy Secretary Chris Wright described the administration's industrialization agenda, "Trump's eyes shut and his head drooped forward." The outlet also said Trump "sounded truly exhausted" as he answered questions from reporters and that his responses were "quiet and short, and his speech was slurred." It wrote, "For years, Trump's entourage has boasted about the president's supposedly endless supply of energy, but over the course of his first two years back in office, the president has repeatedly exhibited bizarre conduct in the public eye." The outlet also used photos of Trump with his eyes closed compared to other outlets that used photos of him speaking and interacting with attendees.
